Commonwealth War Graves in Asia

A personal quest to visit the Commonwealth War Graves across Asia.

Singapore, Kranji

This is one of the more accessible Cemeteries via MRT and a short walk, and I've visited on a number of occasions. It's always a sombre experience, but the design and stature of this Cemetery is impressive.

Hong Kong, Sai Wan

The largest of the many Cemeteries in Hong Kong, it can be reached via a short walk from Chai Wan MTR station. It's a peaceful place despite being in a busy city.

Myanmar, Taukkyan

Not so easy to get to, this involves a drive north from Yangon. The Cemetery is just off the main road so a little noisy, and music was blaring from a parked van while I was there. A lovely Cemetery though, well laid out with some nice features.

Thailand, Chungkai

This Cemetery is just outside the town of Kanchanaburi - I took a train from Bangkok, stayed in the town then hired a bike and cycled out there. Being close to the famous 'Bridge over the River Kwai', this and the Kanchanaburi Cemetery are well-visited which is good to see.

Japan, Yokohama

This a delightful Cemetery, around one hour on train from Tokyo followed by a bus and a thirty minute walk. But it was well worth visiting, located in woodland and very peaceful. They were burning off the grass while I was there, which almost added to the poignancy.

Hong Kong, Stanley

A short walk from Stanley Village, this Cemetery contains the graves of many of those killed in the final stand of the Battle of Hong Kong, as well as those who died during the internment years at Stanley POW Camp.

Hong Kong, St John's Cathedral

St John's Cathedral is a tranquil place situated in the very busy Central area of Hong Kong. There is just one gravestone here - Private Maxwell died close by in the last days of the Battle of Hong Kong and was buried close to where he fell.

Myanmar, Thanbyuzayat

This one a littler harder to get to. I flew into Yangon, then took a four hour bus down to Mawlamyine before taking a one hour taxi from there. Mawlamyine is a delightful town though and the Cemetery is very peaceful and well laid out.

Thailand, Kanchanaburi

This is the main War Cemetery in the town of Kanchanaburi. It's surrounded on all sides by roads, but is easy accessible and not easily forgotten about. It's well-laid out and a peaceful resting place for those brave men who lived and died together in this far-flung corner of Thailand.
